Coding Agents Are Turning AI Into a Price War
The first major AI meta-tool may be powerful enough to pressure SaaS companies, model providers, and the labs that created it
AI coding agents are weakening that assumption.
Companies can now build internal tools tailored to their own workflows, data, permissions, and terminology. A small engineering team may no longer need several separate SaaS products when it can generate a narrower internal alternative and keep modifying it as requirements change.
This does not mean SaaS disappears. Security, reliability, compliance, integrations, and maintenance still matter. But the build-versus-buy calculation is shifting.
There is also a strange feedback loop emerging.
AI labs are creating coding agents that make it cheaper for customers to replace software products, including products built on those same labs’ APIs. The tools created by the labs are therefore producing cost pressure across the SaaS ecosystem and, indirectly, back on the labs themselves.
At the same time, inexpensive Chinese models and open-weight alternatives are pushing down the price of intelligence.
Investors expect enormous returns. One possible path is to make coding agents increasingly powerful. But the more powerful these agents become, the more software they can help reproduce, replace, or commoditize.
Several major AI tool categories have emerged so far: text, image, music, and video generation.
Code is different.
Coding agents are the first major AI meta-tool. They do not only produce an output. They produce other tools.
That makes them unusually powerful, but also constraining. Builders increasingly design around the pressures they face - limits, pricing, control and assumptions of a small number of AI platforms.
The first meta-tool expands what can be built while also shaping its boundaries.
The opportunity is still there, but it is moving.
The stronger position may no longer be a thin interface around one model. It may be the workflow, proprietary context, integrations, distribution, verification, or measurable business outcome around it.
The valuable product is the system built around it.
Keep watching where they converge.
